Andy Warhol - Ai Weiwei exhitition

Warhol-Weiwei

We made it just in time to see the Andy Warhol Ai Weiwei exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria before it closed on the ANZAC long weekend.

We braved the crowds and LOVED every minute. Here is a snap shot of the exhibition...

This major international exhibition features two of the most significant artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries: Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei.

Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei, developed by the NGV and The Andy Warhol Museum, with the participation of Ai Weiwei, explores the significant influence of these two exemplary artists on modern art and contemporary life, focusing on the parallels, intersections and points of difference between the two artists’ practices. Surveying the scope of both artists’ careers, the exhibition at the NGV presents more than 300 works, including major new commissions, immersive installations and a wide representation of paintings, sculpture, film, photography, publishing and social media.

Presenting the work of both artists, the exhibition explores modern and contemporary art, life and cultural politics through the activities of two exemplary figures – one of whom represents twentieth century modernity and the ‘American century’; and the other contemporary life in the twenty-first century and what has been heralded as the ‘Chinese century’ to come.

Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei premieres a suite of major new commissions from Ai Weiwei, including an installation from the Forever Bicycles series, composed from almost 1500 bicycles; a major five-metre-tall work from Ai’s Chandelier series of crystal and light; Blossom 2015, a spectacular installation in the form of a large bed of thousands of delicate, intricately designed white porcelain flowers; and a room-scale installation featuring portraits of Australian advocates for human rights and freedom of speech and information.

It’s no secret Skin and Threads was looking at Where the Wild Things Are in the development of next winter’s collection.

The iconic children’s book that never stops being readable, charming and beautiful; we’ve felt like running away, being the king or queen of our own world, but ultimately realizing that we miss the people we love and we have to return home.

We couldn’t resist the idea of feathers and scales and skins, of representing them in different ways through texture, fabric and colour choice. Of having an adventure again.

From oversized mottled knitwear and suede fringing, wool felt and mock textile prints on silk, the collection is all about texture, designed to be reminiscent of monster’s fur and fay away lands.

For AW16 we wanted warmth, comfort and a sense of familiarity. Our silk prints mimic traditional tweeds, twills and checks, while our new tailored cardigan and relaxed pant look and feel like knitwear but are made from a beautifully soft woven fabric made and designed for us (in Italy).

Tailoring has been given an update with our new Shawl Collar Blazer and our bib front dinner shirt continues the new formality.

Fabrication has been key to the development of the AW16 collection and we have pushed Skin and Threads further than ever with exciting textile technology.

Our Patch Pocket Jacket is a raw edge wool felt that wears like jersey, but can be dressed up and our amazing new Double Breasted Coat is sure to become a winter classic. It is available in a deep, navy mélange wool.

Look to our wool/cashmere crown sweater to see this is serious collection with a twinkle in its eye.

To remind us we were all kids once.
