When you wear your knitwear, you must always keep in mind that the fibres are delicate. So be careful not to get pulls from jewellery, nails or on rough surfaces. Also be weary of chemicals that may come in contact with it, such as perfume and deodorant. These may cause discoloration to the fabric.
Contrary to popular belief, dry cleaning cashmere can actually be bad for the life of your sweater.
The chemicals used in dry cleaning can break down the fibres over time, We recommend gently hand washing wool and cashmere to maintain their soft hand feel.
Eucalyptus hand wash is sold in all major supermarkets and is nice and gentle on your knitwear. Never use normal laundry powder or liquid as it is too harsh for the fibres, and can do more harm than good.
Hand washing will also ensure the longevity of your knitwear.
3. HAND WASHING METHOD
STEP 1: Lather Up
Fill a basin with cool water and add eucalyptus hand wash.
Submerge the sweater and make sure it is evenly soaped all over but do not rub.
STEP 2: Soak
Soak for 30 minutes. Do not worry if the water becomes cloudy or coloured; this is normal and will not mean any loss of colour to the garment.
STEP 3: Rinse and Roll
Rinse well by running cool water through the item until the water is no longer soapy. Press the water out gently (without wringing).
STEP 4: Dry
Lay your sweater flat on a towel in its natural shape. Roll up the sweater in the towel (like a sleeping bag) to remove excess water.
Then lay the item flat in its natural shape on a drying rack or a clean towel.
- NEVER put cashmere or wool in a washing machine, even on a knitwear/wool cycle programme.
- NEVER put into a dryer.
- NEVER hang a knitwear piece. It will cause stretch marks and lines.
The key to caring for your knitwear is ironing. Use the wool setting on your iron with steam, this smooths down the fibres and restores your garment.
Before you iron, you can use a small amount of linen water or add a few drops of lavender essential oil into a small spray bottle and mix with water (*you can purchase these from your supermarket)
This is especially great when you go to store your knitwear for the warmer months, as lavender helps to fend off moths.
As mentioned above, storing your knitwear with lavender helps fend off moths. If you are storing away your knitwear for the warmer months, make sure it is clean, pressed and folded neatly so that when you go to pull it out again on a chilly evening, it is as beautiful as it was the day you put it away.
Storing your knitwear in a dust bag with a small pouch of dried lavender is ideal, to ensure no nasty moths get to them between wears.
